American Images does custom aerial
photography throughout the United States. In July 2002, they were taking
pictures of homes, businesses and farms around Sumner County. We asked
them to take a picture for us to use on www.PortlandTN.com, and they were kind
enough to do so. (They donated their services to us, and we really thank
them!)
You will want to click on the picture above to enlarge it. Before you do, let us tell you what you're looking at. (When we first saw the picture, we didn't think it was Portland. It is!) Start in the lower left corner of the picture. The road that runs beside the trees is Jackson Road. Follow Jackson Road north (up), and you'll see a road going off to the right between two groups of trees. That's Village Drive. Go right on Village Drive, and you'll see the post office (with the green roof) and the Farmers Bank (red brick with black roof). Across the street from the Farmers Bank is the two-story Collins Building with the light-blue roof. Directly behind the Collins building is the H.G. Hill/Fred's/China Buffet shopping center. In the exact middle of the picture, you can see the intersection of Hwy 52 and Hwy. 109, and you'll see the Food Lion shopping center on the northeast corner of the intersection. There are two tall trees directly behind Food Lion, and you can see Portland City Hall (with the black roof) directly behind the top of the tree on the right. If you follow Hwy. 109 to the left of the picture, you'll see the Richland Building (two-story red brick building) at the corner of Hwy. 109 and Main Street.

By the way, when we scanned the original photo, we lost a little bit of color and resolution. The detail in their original photo is much better!
Portland from the Air
This is a picture of downtown Portland taken by the United States Geological
Survey (U.S. Department of the Interior) in 1997. That's Hwy 109 on the
left and the CSX railroad in the center of the picture, both running from top to
bottom. Connecting them is Main Street. City Hall is the long
building with the black roof across the street from the railroad. You can

of the entire area. This is a web site maintained by Microsoft. Once
you get there, just click on the "Advanced Find" section, then "Address Search"
and enter a street address, city and/or zip code. If you look closely, you
should be able to find your house!
